The Class 7 knowledge test is the first step to driving in Alberta. It is a short computer test, taken at a registry agent, and you can try again the next day if you fail.

People often ask three things: how many questions there are, how many you can miss, and what it costs. The answers are below, along with ID, languages and accessibility options.

All figures come from Alberta government pages and the 2026 Driver's Guide. We checked the fee against the registry agent product catalogue effective July 2, 2026.

In short

  • The test has 30 multiple-choice questions, and you need 25 correct to pass.1
  • You can take it once per day, and you pay for every attempt.1
  • The fee is $5.00 government fee plus a registry agent service charge of up to $12.60.2
  • The Class 7 test is available in 25 languages.1
  • You must be 14 or older and, if under 18, have parental consent.3

Format and passing mark

The Alberta government says the test has 30 multiple-choice questions and that you must answer 25 correctly to pass.1 That allows 5 wrong answers.

The test is taken on a computer at a registry agent office. If you fail, you may take it again, but only once per day.1

The 2026 Driver's Guide is the study material. It covers licensing, signals and markings, right of way, speed, sharing the road, and driving within the law, including demerit points.4

Fee

The registry agent product catalogue effective July 2, 2026 lists the knowledge test, for all licence classes, at a $5.00 government fee plus a maximum agent service charge of $12.60.2 That makes $17.60 the most you should pay per attempt.

The government page confirms that a fee applies and that you pay each time you take the test.1

What to bring

You need acceptable identification.5 Applicants must be at least 14. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian has to give consent.3 You also take a vision screening at the registry agent.5

After you pass, you get a temporary licence valid for 30 days. The licence card arrives within 21 business days, and you should report a missing card within 60 days.5

Languages and accessibility

The Class 7 knowledge test is offered in 25 languages.1 Audio-assistant devices that read the questions aloud are available, along with other accessibility options.1

If you bring a translator, the government asks that you attempt the test at least 3 times in a supported language first, unless your language is not available in the system.1

How to prepare

Read the Driver's Guide, then test yourself. Our trainer has 369 questions in 10 topics. Sixty come from the two official Alberta Transportation practice tests (checked against the 2026 guide), and the rest are our own, written from the guide. They are not the real test questions, but they cover the same material.
