A Class 7 licence lets you practise driving in Alberta, but it comes with firm rules. Break them and you can lose the licence, and the clock on your path to a full licence stops.

The rules cover who sits beside you, when you may drive, how many people can ride along, and what counts as a violation.

Here they are in plain language, taken from Alberta government pages and the 2026 Driver's Guide.

In short

  • You drive a Class 5 or 6 vehicle with a supervisor over 18 who holds a full Class 5 licence and sits in the front passenger seat.1
  • You may not drive from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.1
  • Your blood alcohol limit is zero.1
  • You may carry no more people than there are seat belts.1
  • Your licence is suspended at 8 demerit points.1

Who can supervise you

With a Class 7 licence you may drive a Class 5 or 6 vehicle if you are with someone over 18 who holds a full Class 5 licence. They must sit in the front passenger seat.1

The Driver's Guide adds that the accompanying driver must not be in the graduated licensing program themselves.2 A friend who just passed their own road test does not qualify.

Curfew

Class 7 drivers may not drive between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.1 Breaking the curfew carries 2 demerit points.2

Zero tolerance

Alcohol and drug limits are zero for Class 7 drivers.1 Under the IRS ZERO: Novice program, the consequences include an immediate 30 day licence suspension, a seven day vehicle seizure and a $200 fine plus a 20 per cent victim fine surcharge.2

Passengers

You can carry no more people than there are seat belts in the vehicle.1 Exceeding that limit carries 2 demerit points.2

Demerit points

Eight or more demerit points within two years means your licence privileges are automatically suspended. After the suspension, 3 points remain on your record for two years from the assessed date.2

Typical penalties from the guide: 3 points for failing to stop at a stop sign or red light, 4 points for following too closely, 6 points for careless driving.2

Test your knowledge of these rules with a free practice test. Then see how the licence leads to a full licence in from Class 7 to Class 5.
